Lindsay Lohan is booked into jail
Lindsay Lohan will spend 13 days in county jail, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s officials confirmed Tuesday, shortly after the 24-year-old actress began serving her sentence for violation of court-ordered probation.
The jail term — a fraction of the 90 days to which she had been sentenced — results from the sheriff’s policy of early release of nonviolent offenders to reduce overcrowding in the jails.
Lohan surrendered at the Beverly Hills courthouse, walking briskly through a crowd of media and even a shower of confetti from fans.
She arrived 10 minutes late for court. But unlike two weeks ago when she sobbed and trembled as the judge sentenced her for a probation violation, Lohan was dry-eyed and grim-faced this time. Her nails, painted with an expletive during her last court appearance, were clear.
Accompanied by her lawyer, Shawn Chapman Holley, Lohan listened as Judge Marsha Revel declared there would be no 24-hour monitoring or house arrest instead of a jail stay.
After the cameras in the courtroom were ordered turned off, Lohan stood and her hands were cuffed behind her back, the clicking of the metal echoing across the silent crowded room. She briefly looked over her shoulder toward her mother, Dina, and her 16-year-old sister, Ali, who cried. As Lohan was escorted out by a female sheriff’s deputy, her father, Michael — from whom she is estranged — shouted, “I love you, Lindsay.”
She was taken from Beverly Hills to the Century Regional Detention Facility in Lynwood in the back of an unmarked Ford Crown Victoria, driven by a Sheriff’s Department official in a slow-moving 22-mile ride dogged by paparazzi and helicopters. When she arrived, she was driven into the facility, where she changed into a jail-issue orange jumpsuit and posed for a booking photo.
Outside the Beverly Hills courthouse, a gaggle of fans were thrilled just to have caught a glimpse of her. “It’s Lindsay Lohan — she’s the greatest actress,” said Joe Gassmann, 27, who wore a “Free Lindsay” shirt and drove four days from Grand Rapids, Mich., to be there. “I think this is a serious injustice.”
Deputy L.A. County Dist. Atty. Danette Meyers didn’t see it that way, saying the sentence was appropriate. “The message to the public is don’t drink and drive,” she said. She added, “If you do drink and drive and you are punished for it, complete the programs.”
Lohan has now completed her alcohol education classes, which she was required to take after a 2007 DUI arrest, according to Holley. But her failure to do so on a weekly basis was considered a violation of her probation.
Lohan finds herself in the same jail as an inmate who was part of a burglary “bling ring” that targeted, among other celebrities, Lohan. The inmate, Alexis Neiers, a 19–year-old Calabasas woman, is serving 180 days for burglarizing actor Orlando Bloom’s home.
