Deputies help Secret Santas gift money to families in need

Share

Families across San Diego County teared up and rejoiced as sheriff’s deputies handed them cash and gift cards from three Secret Santas on Saturday.

The three community members who wished to remain anonymous donated a combined $15,000 and enlisted the Sheriff’s Department’s help to spread the money to families in need.

Dozens of families — from Encinitas to Vista and Lemon Grove to Ramona — were surprised with $200 to $500 in cash, as well as gift cards to Target, Starbucks and AMC Theatres.

Deputies had encountered the disadvantaged families while working at schools and on patrol, officials said.

“It was a wonderful experience,” said Melissa Aquino, spokeswoman for the Sheriff’s Department. “When deputies are out on patrol they always encounter people in the worst moment of their lives. It’s good for them to give back and see tears of joy and be there for them on a happy note.”

Spokesman Ryan Keim added: “It reminds the deputies why they put on the uniform every day.”

The Sheriff’s Department thanked the donors for their contributions.

“Without their support we wouldn’t’ be able to do this,” Aquino said.
