Heated contest between Berman and Sherman comes to a close

The rollicking campaign for California’s 30th Congressional District drew to a close Tuesday with the candidates themselves largely out of view, even as a last burst of advertising and a volunteer effort to turn out votes pushed the contest to the finish.
Volunteers for Rep. Howard Berman spent the campaign’s closing days handing out door hangers featuring Rep. Brad Sherman during the testiest of the campaign’s debates, when he roughly threw an arm around Berman. The other side listed Berman’s many endorsements, including this paper’s and those of Gov. Jerry Brown, Senx. Dianne Feinstein and Barbara Boxer and Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa.
Sherman was airing cable television ads that similarly split between positive and negative, reminding voters of his accomplishments in office and charging that Berman extensively traveled abroad at taxpayer expense.
Even as those pitches made their way to voters, the candidates on Tuesday wound down their personal appearances. Berman was scheduled to vote early Tuesday morning and had no other public events scheduled until Tuesday night, when he will watch returns at his Encino headquarters. Sherman also was slated to cast his ballot when the polls opened and then join a group of Democrats who will be waiting on the results in the presidential campaign before hosting his own party, also in Encino, to watch returns in the congressional race.
