Readers React: Out-of-state UC students are an asset to California, not a burden

Share

To the editor: It was disappointing to read the letter from the person who was glad to see an audit of nonresident students attending California universities and somehow acquiring their education only to return to wherever they came from without contributing to the cost of their education. (“UC admissions audit is a win for California students,” Readers React, April 3)

Nothing could be further from the truth. Out-of-state students pay out-of-state tuition, which is much higher than the price paid by residents. The writer implies these out-of-state students are depriving California of some kind of money. She must have missed the part of federal funding for higher education.

But that’s not the point. Her point is that someone is getting something at the expense of California.

Walk through any hospital and university classroom building; listen to the accents spoken by the doctors and professors. One gets the impression people came to California, benefited from the states’ education system and then stayed here after graduating.

All people in California benefit from these “interlopers” and their somehow ill-gotten education.
