Readers React: Cross belongs on L.A. County seal because of historical accuracy

To the editor: “Disingenuous” describes The Times’ transparent editorial revealing its own resolve to sanitize history — cloaked in a condescending and misleading discourse on the separation of church and state in America and a misguided attack on me. (“Supervisor Antonovich, constituents can pick their own religious symbols,” editorial, Nov. 15)

The San Gabriel Mission is a commonly recognized icon in the region and the birthplace of Los Angeles County. In January 2014, the Board of Supervisors voted simply to replace the depiction of the mission on the county seal with an accurate version that featured a small cross — which, of course, nearly all missions have, including those depicted on other municipal seals.

To the editor: One letter writer accuses The Times of harboring a “secular bias.” Only a little knowledge of science shows that the universe has a secular bias.
