Opinion: Finally, words of wisdom from Trump: ‘I should have left them in jail!’
To the editor: I’m flabbergasted! Never would I have expected to find myself in agreement with President Trump about anything, but his most recent comment regarding the three UCLA students detained in China on shoplifting charges — that he “should have left them in jail” — was right on the mark. (“Trump changes mind on 3 UCLA students arrested in China: ‘Should have left them in jail!’,” Nov. 19)
Upon their return to the U.S., following Trump’s intervention with the Chinese on their behalf, the players held a news conference in which they recited prepared “apologies” but their body language and dispassionate delivery conveyed absolutely no sense that they really meant the words they were reading.
Then LaVar Ball, the father of one of these students, even went so far as to say that “they try to make a big deal out of nothing.”
Trump exerted his influence to get them released without a trial (or subsequent punishment) and yet they seem not to really appreciate the gravity of their situation. Does the term “spoiled brats” come to mind?

To the editor: LaVar Ball said that Trump didn’t do much to help his kid get out of jail in China. I didn’t think it was humanly possible, but LaVar Ball makes Trump look intelligent.
Barry Saunders, Monrovia
To the editor: I cannot think of two other people in America more deserving of each other than Donald Trump and LaVar Ball.
