Skelton: Sacramento mayor plots comeback win

Share

When Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson began pushing to prevent the Kings from moving to Seattle, he promised to line up big-time investors to finance his effort.

Now he has what he calls a “dream team” of deep pockets, including Silicon Valley software tycoon Vivek Ranadive and Beverly Hills investor Ron Burkle.

Keeping the Kings in Sacramento is still far from a sure thing, but George Skelton says in his Monday column that Johnson has proven to be a capable politician and deal maker.

He says Johnson, a former NBA all-star, “is indisputably the right mayor at the right time.”

“It’s impossible to imagine any other mayor anywhere — let alone from Sacramento — who would have such entree into the National Basketball Assn. as the city struggles to keep Seattle from pilfering its beloved Kings,” Skelton writes.

All of Skelton’s columns are here.
