Part of Laguna Canyon Road reopens from 18-hour closure after car knocks down utility pole
A portion of Laguna Canyon Road was reopened in both directions by 4 p.m. Monday, about 18 hours after authorities closed the roadway because of a downed utility pole, Laguna Beach police said.
Laguna Beach police and firefighters responded at 9:40 p.m Sunday to a report of a crash in the 2600 block of Laguna Canyon Road, police Sgt. Jim Cota wrote in an email.
Cota said the driver of a Honda Civic likely fell asleep at the wheel and struck a wooden utility pole owned by Frontier Communications. The crash caused authorities to shut down the state highway between El Toro Road and Canyon Acres Drive.
The man was taken to Mission Hospital in Laguna Beach with minor injuries, Cota said.
Cota said he didn’t know the man’s age or city of residence.
Part of Laguna Canyon Road also was closed in both directions for an hour Sunday morning after a car and a motorcycle collided in the 2900 block, Cota said.
A 53-year-old Irvine man riding the motorcycle collided with a car driven by a 44-year-old Laguna Beach woman who was turning left from a private driveway onto the highway, police said.
The motorcyclist was ejected from his bike and suffered a broken right arm and right leg and internal injuries, Cota said. The man was taken to Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo.
The driver of the car was uninjured, Cota said.
