Dodgers’ Yasiel Puig named NL player of the month

And good things just keep happening for Yasiel Puig. Nice little baseball birthday.

One year to the day that Puig made his major league debut with the Dodgers, he received two pieces of good news only a couple hours apart.

Puig has been named the National League’s player of the month for May. Earlier Tuesday the latest results in the N.L. All-Star voting showed he had jumped from fifth among outfielders to first.

In his 28 games last month, Puig led all major leaguers in average (.398, 43 for 108) and on-base percentage (.492). He also led the N.L. in RBIs (25), slugging percentage (.731) and extra-base hits (19). He hit eight homers to tie Miami’s Giancarlo Stanton for the league lead. His 43 hits set a Los Angeles Dodgers record for May.

Puig has reached base in all 27 of his games in May. He has currently reached base in his last 34 consecutive games.

This is the second player-of-the-month honor for Puig, who received both it and the rookie of the month awards last June.

All this success caught the fans’ attention too. After trailing four other outfielders when the NL released its first voting results, Puig skyrocket to first with Tuesday’s updated tally.

He currently leads in the outfield with 935,276 votes. He’s followed by last week’s NL outfield leader Charlie Blackmon (883,186) of the Rockies and Stanton (863,307).

Puig is currently second in the NL to the Rockies Troy Tulowitzki in hitting (.340) and on-base percentage (.430), and third in slugging (.606) behind Stanton and Tulowitzki.
