Dodgers Wednesday morning notes: Lilly, Sellers, lineup

Share

PHOENIX -- Ted Lilly was scheduled to face the San Diego Padres Wednesday, but will instead pitch in a minor-league game on a practice field at Camelback Ranch.

There were two reasons for the move.

With Lilly scheduled to face the Padres on March 27 and again in his first start of the regular season, Manager Don Mattingly wanted to limit the number of times the division rival saw him.

Also, a rain-shortened game on Sunday limited the workload of some relievers competing for the final roster spot and Mattingly wants to see them pitch in game conditions.

Starting Wednesday in Lilly’s place will be veteran Jamey Wright, who is camp on a minor-league contract. Todd Coffey, Kenley Jansen, Scott Rice, Fernando Nieve, John Grabow and Ronald Beliasario. Of that group, only Coffey and Jansen are assured places on the opening-day roster.

Speaking of players competing for a roster spot, utilityman Justin Sellers is sidelined with tightness in his quadriceps muscle. He is expected back Friday.
