The Ducks’ defense was intact for all of 14 periods.

Then Brandon Montour exited Monday’s blowout loss to the Chicago Blackhawks in the third period.

He won’t suit up Wednesday against the St. Louis Blues as he recovers from a hyper-extended elbow, coach Randy Carlyle said.

“It looked a lot worse than it actually is,” Carlyle said. “We don’t want to risk it turns into anything long term.”

This is Montour’s first full season in the NHL, and he’s quickly emerged as an offensive force on the backend.

His six goals lead all Ducks defensemen, and are tied for second among all NHL defensemen.

Montour’s 13 points make him the third-leading scorer among Ducks players, and with top scorer Rickard Rakell already out of the lineup, this is yet another big blow to the team’s chances during a pivotal road swing.

The 23-year-old has played in all 24 of the Ducks’ game this season.
