Ducks Coach Bruce Boudreau has a sure-fire plan for determining his starting goalie for a first-round playoff series against the Nashville Predators.

“Heads is Freddie,” Boudreau said on a conference call Monday, “tails is Gibby.”

A coin flip to decide between John Gibson and Frederik Andersen?

Boudreau was joking, but said seriously that he probably will use one goalie for the series that begins Friday at Honda Center. Beyond that he is open to the two-goalie system he used most of the season, partly because of injuries and illness to Andersen.

“I’ve got to believe, maybe not in this series, but maybe down the road, both will play,” Boudreau said.

A case could be made for either. Gibson played the majority down the stretch after Andersen suffered a concussion March 30, but Andersen returned for the regular-season finale Sunday and Boudreau said he was “as good as he’s looked, ever.”

Andersen and Gibson combined to win the William M. Jennings Trophy for fewest goals allowed this season.

General Manager Bob Murray is expected to update the status of several injured players Tuesday. Gibson and Ryan Kesler returned to Southern California before Sunday’s game because of lower-body injuries, and Boudreau characterized them as “bumps and bruises.”

“As far as all other injuries, there’s nothing earth-shattering,” Boudreau said.

The Ducks did not practice Monday.
