Kings come up empty in shootout loss at Colorado

Nathan MacKinnon scored the only shootout goal and the Colorado Avalanche beat the defending champion Kings, 3-2, Saturday night in the teams’ preseason finale at Las Vegas.

Dennis Everberg and Matt Duchene scored in regulation for the Avalanche, and Semyon Varlamov stopped 20 shots.

Tyler Toffoli scored twice for the Kings and Jonathan Quick finished with 27 saves.

Toffoli scored 3:09 apart in the second period.

Everberg beat Quick in front of the net at 8:46, and Duchene tied at 5:47 of the third period.

The Kings will open the regular season against San Jose on Wednesday night, when they will raise their Stanley Cup banner at Staples Center. Colorado opens at Minnesota on Thursday night.
