Jake Muzzin signs five-year, $20-million contract extension with Kings

Now if Jake Muzzin really wants imported granite counters in the kitchen and stainless steel appliances in his soon-to-be-built home in Woodstock, Canada, there is almost no reason to prevent it.

In fact, there are about 20 million reasons to proceed.

The affable Kings defenseman signed a five-year, $20-million contract extension Wednesday, a deal that will run through the 2019-20 season. It carries an annual average value of $4 million and means the Kings have locked up another key defenseman for an extended period.

For the sake of comparison, earlier this week the Minnesota Wild signed defenseman Jonas Brodin to a six-year contract extension worth $25 million.

“It’s exciting,” Muzzin said Wednesday after practice in El Segundo. “This is a place I want to stay and I want to play here for a long time. I’m very happy that we got a deal done and this is home for me for the next five years.”

Muzzin has not played this season because of an undisclosed upper-body injury, missing the first four regular-season games, and his return does not seem imminent.

He indicated that he will be seeing the doctor later this week to get an update on his progress. His place in the lineup has been filled by Brayden McNabb.

Muzzin’s development accelerated last season, and he and defense partner Drew Doughty formed the Kings’ top shutdown pair on the way to the Stanley Cup in 2014. In 26 playoff games, Muzzin scored six goals and 12 points. He was originally signed by the Kings in 2010 as an undrafted free agent.

Said Kings Coach Darryl Sutter: “It just shows the progress that the organization and he made in terms of developing, getting better and finding your spot and knowing you’re in a good place.”

After this contract extension expires, Muzzin, who is 25, could have attractive options via free agency. But that is years away and Muzzin was pleased to be able to fully concentrate on hockey instead of facing continued contract discussions.

Then there is the Stanley Cup defense, first and foremost.

“Just to build from those experiences and then to come into this year and get a deal done early and get that off my mind,” Muzzin said. “Now we just play.”
