Dodgers’ Dee Gordon gets extra day to heal

Share

The Dodgers chose not to start Dee Gordon on Monday night to give the rookie shortstop an extra day to nurse his injured right shoulder.

“Dee’s good, he’s still got just a little tenderness,” Manager Don Mattingly said before the Dodgers’ game against the Philadelphia Phillies at Dodger Stadium.

“He probably could have played today but we’re just going to give him an extra day,” Mattingly said, adding that the 23-year-old Gordon also might be a late-game replacement Monday.

Gordon injured the shoulder Saturday at Chase Field in Phoenix when he dived to tag the Arizona Diamondbacks’ Kelly Johnson in a rundown. Gordon also did not start Sunday’s game there.

Gordon said Monday he was relieved the shoulder wasn’t dislocated or otherwise more seriously injured.

“I didn’t really know the severity of it” when the fall happened, said Gordon, who entered Monday’s game batting .236 and having stolen 11 bases. “I just knew my shoulder was hurting.”

Gordon was called up from triple-A Albuquerque on July 31 after veteran Rafael Furcal was traded to the St. Louis Cardinals, and the speedy Gordon is seen as a viable candidate to be the Dodgers’ main shortstop next season.

Injury updates

Reliever Jonathan Broxton, idled because of a bone bruise in his right pitching elbow, was scheduled to see a doctor Monday night in hopes of getting clearance to start throwing again.

Broxton, who had been the Dodgers’ closer, has been on the disabled list since May 4.

“Brox is supposed to see the doctor tonight and hoping to get cleared to throw … to start the process” of rehabilitation, Mattingly said.

Broxton, 27, started a minor league rehab assignment in mid-June and pitched in two games. But after he complained of more discomfort in the elbow, he again was put on extensive rest.

Juan Uribe, meanwhile, will need “probably another week” before the Dodgers consider a rehab assignment for the infielder.

The 32-year-old Uribe has been on the DL since July 24 because of a left hip strain, although he has been taking batting practice and doing some fielding drills recently.

He’ll need one or two rehab games to “make sure he’s not going to make one [injurious] at-bat, or one wrong move and be back on [the DL],” Mattingly said.

Uribe was batting .204 with four home runs and 28 runs batted in when he was put on the DL.

Short hops

A sizable No. 4 was cut into the center-field grass at Dodger Stadium in preparation of ceremonies honoring late Dodgers Hall of Fame outfielder Duke Snider on Tuesday night; fans also will receive a Snider bobblehead doll. … Reliever Kenley Jansen, put on the disabled list late last month because of an irregular heartbeat, is scheduled Tuesday to visit young patients at White Memorial Medical Center in Los Angeles, where Jansen was treated.
