New York Mets Manager Terry Collins said that the newborn son of pitcher Jacob deGrom could be released from a hospital Monday.

Collins said he spoke Sunday with the pitcher, who is with his family in Deland, Fla. Stacey deGrom gave birth to Jaxon on April 11.

DeGrom, who did not take his last turn in the rotation because of a sore lat muscle in his right side, was put on the family medical emergency list Saturday.

“I talked to Jake this afternoon and they’re hoping they can take the baby home tomorrow, which would be a huge step forward,” Collins said.

Collins said deGrom threw a bullpen session Sunday and is scheduled to pitch a simulated game Tuesday.

Former teamates in Japan pitch against each other

Masahiro Tanaka of the New York Yankees topped Hisashi Iwakuma of the Seattle Mariners, 4-3, in the first major league pitching matchup of former Japanese teammates.

The game was broadcast live on television at 2 a.m. in Tokyo.

Tanaka (1-0) gave up three runs and six hits in seven innings. He is 4-0 in four starts against Seattle.

The right-hander worked out of a bases-loaded jam in a 24-pitch first inning, when Kyle Seager drove in a run with a groundout.

“Just extremely satisfied being able to get that win,” Tanaka said through an interpreter.

Iwakuma (0-2), a teammate of Tanaka from 2007 to 2011 with the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles, gave up four runs and eight hits in seven innings. His wild pitch in the fifth inning allowed the tiebreaking run to score.

“I was very excited to face [my] ex-teammate,” the right-hander said through an interpreter. “Just watching him, in general, he was pitching with composure and he kept the ball down. Looking at that, I said to myself, ‘I’ve got to keep the ball down, too.’ And I was able to make adjustments, but it was kind of too late.”
