The Kansas City Royals needed to revamp their rotation Thursday after putting struggling starters Chris Young and Kris Medlen on the 15-day disabled list.
An MRI on Wednesday determined that Young had a strained right forearm. Medlen has right rotator cuff inflammation. Young’s stint is retroactive to Tuesday, Medlen’s to Wednesday.
Dillon Gee and Danny Duffy will fill in as starters while Young and Medlen are sidelined.
Alex Rodriguez did light running drills at Yankee Stadium on Thursday as the New York Yankees star keeps working his way back from a strained right hamstring that put him on the 15-day disabled list. The 40-year-old designated hitter went on the disabled list May 4 amid concerns that he might be sidelined longer than the two weeks. General Manager Brian Cashman said the team is “encouraged” by Rodriguez’s progress but that it’s “too early to call” whether he’ll be ready to activated when eligible. ...Left-handed reliever Joe Beimel has agreed to terms with the Miami Marlins and will report to extended spring training pending a physical.
Beimel, 39, has pitched in 676 games and spent the 2014 and 2015 seasons with the Seattle Mariners. Last year he had a 3.99 earned-run average in 471/3 innings.
