Top-ranked Kentucky powers past South Florida, 84-63

Jamal Murray had 21 points and No. 1 Kentucky scored the final 15 points of the first half on the way to beating South Florida, 84-63, in the HoopHall Miami Invitational on Friday at American Airlines Arena.

Skal Labissiere scored 17 points for the Wildcats (6-0), who led by as many as 31. Charles Matthews scored 11 points and Isaiah Briscoe finished with seven assists for Kentucky, now a winner of 37 consecutive regular-season games and 39 in a row against unranked opponents.

Chris Perry scored 14 points for USF (1-5), which has lost 18 consecutive games against teams ranked in the top 25.

No. 3 Michigan State 77, Boise State 67: Denzel Valentine scored a career-high 32 points, hitting five consecutive three-pointers to break open a tight game in the second half, and the Spartans (6-0) gave Coach Tom Izzo his 501st career win in the semifinals of the DirecTV Wooden Legacy at Cal State Fullerton’s Titan Gym. Nick Duncan led the Broncos (3-3) with 19 points.

Northeastern 78, at No. 15 Miami 77: Quincy Ford made a jumper at the buzzer to the Huskies (5-1) the upset win over the Hurricanes (5-1) at Coral Gables, Fla. Northeastern beat a top-25 team for the first time since an 86-84 victory over Louisville in 1986.

Gonzaga 73, No. 18 Connecticut 70: Kyle Wiltjer scored 17 points, Eric McClellan added 15 and the Bulldogs (4-1) held off the Huskies (4-2) in the Battle 4 Atlantis third-place game at Paradise Island, Bahamas.

Alabama 64, No. 20 Wichita State 60: Shannon Hale scored 20 points and Riley Norris had 12 for the Crimson Tide (3-2) in a consolation-round game at the AdvoCare Invitational in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. Alabama (3-2) beat a top 25 team on a neutral court for the first time since a Nov. 29, 2009, victory over then-No. 15 Michigan. The Shockers (2-3) lost their second straight tournament game without senior guard Fred VanVleet, out with ankle and hamstring injuries.

UCLA will participate in next season’s DirecTV Wooden Legacy tournament, the school announced. The three-day tournament is named after former UCLA Coach John Wooden, but the Bruins haven’t participated since 2009, when it had a different name. The event, which begins Nov. 24, 2016, will also include Cal State Northridge, Dayton, Nebraska, New Mexico, Portland, Texas A&M and Virginia Tech.
