Non-decision at trade deadline was good one for Braves

Under pressure to improve his lineup, Braves General Manager Frank Wren wouldn’t send his best pitching prospects to the Mets for Carlos Beltran. That looks like a great decision, and not just because Beltran has been a nonfactor for the Giants. Randall Delgado, 21, and Arodys Vizcaino, 20, pitched great in a win against the Giants on Tuesday, and left-hander Mike Minor, 23, beat the Giants’ Tim Lincecum on Thursday. With those three and Julio Teheran, 20, in the wings behind guys such as Tommy Hanson, Jair Jurrjens, Craig Kimbel Kimbrel and Jonny Venters, the Braves should be strong for years. . . . MLB executives will be surprised if the NFL follows through on blood testing for HGH, which it prematurely announced as part of its recent labor agreement. MLB wants that in its labor deal — it already uses blood tests in the minors, which is how Mike Jacobs wound up suspended for 50 games last week — but knows it will be tough to sell baseball players if the football union doesn’t agree to it. He’s 9-0 at home since joining the Brewers. . . . The Red Sox are excited about the future of power-hitting Ryan Lavarnway, who was promoted from triple A with Kevin Youkilis and David Ortiz out.
