Dodgers’ plans don’t include Manny Ramirez

Share

The Mannywood signs can remain in storage. So can the wigs.

Manny Ramirez is not coming back to the Dodgers.

General Manager Ned Colletti immediately shot down the far-fetched idea of re-signing Ramirez, who electrified Dodger Stadium upon arriving in 2008 only to leave two years later as a disgraced figure.

“I think we’re probably past that at this point,” Colletti said.

Ramirez, who retired last season instead of facing a 100-game suspension for violating baseball’s drug policy for the second time, has filed for reinstatement.

Any team that signs Ramirez would be without him for 50 games. Because Ramirez never technically served his suspension but was nonetheless out of the game for a significant time, Major League Baseball and the players’ union agreed to cut his ban in half.

The Dodgers’ outfield is set. Matt Kemp, Andre Ethier and Juan Rivera are slated to start, with Jerry Sands and Tony Gwynn Jr. expected to be the backups.

White interviews with Astros

After a season in which a player he drafted won the Cy Young Award and another was a most-valuable-player candidate, Assistant General Manager Logan White interviewed with the Houston Astros for their vacant general manager’s position.

But on Wednesday night, the Astros announced they had hired someone else with a background in the draft: Jeff Luhnow, the vice president of player development and scouting for the St. Louis Cardinals.

White also interviewed for the Astros’ GM job the last time it was open, in 2007. The Astros hired Ed Wade, who was fired last month.

Mattingly on McCourt, Magic

Manager Don Mattingly said he hasn’t talked to owner Frank McCourt since McCourt announced plans to sell the team.

What about Magic Johnson? The former Lakers star is part of a group preparing to bid for the Dodgers.

“Have not,” Mattingly said. “I haven’t talked to Larry Bird, either.”

Short hops

Aaron Harang underwent a physical examination to finalize his pending contract with the Dodgers. The deal is expected to be announced Thursday. … The Dodgers could make a minor trade in the next couple of days, according to Colletti. … The team remains in talks with free agent right-hander Mike MacDougal, who posted a 2.09 earned-run average in 69 appearances for them last season.
