Update: Honduras, coming off its second World Cup appearance, is the class of its group but Jamaica, led by Galaxy keeper Donovan Ricketts, isn’t far behind — especially given the Hondurans’ recent bout with injury. On paper, the first matches for both teams look to be little more than tuneups. Honduras, in its third month under Colombian Coach Luis Fernando Suarez, figures to play an active counter-attacking game built around English-based midfielders Wilson Palacios and Hendry Thomas. But Honduras will be weak on the back line after losing World Cup veterans Emilio Izaguirre and Maynor Figueroa to recent injuries. Jamaica, meanwhile, has what may be the country’s best national team since its 1998 World Cup squad — but it will have to overcome the absence of potent scorer Omar Cummings and veteran defender Tyrone Marshall. Grenada, making its second consecutive Gold Cup appearance, is the smallest nation to qualify for the tournament. It will be handicapped by the loss of Kithson Bain, who led Grenada with five goals during the Caribbean Cup.
