Concussion sidelines UCLA quarterback Kevin Prince

Reporting from Houston — UCLA quarterback Kevin Prince, no stranger to injuries, suffers a concussion in the second quarter. This is Prince’s second concussion; he has also had knee surgery, a broken jaw and a separated shoulder.

The sequence has become all too familiar. One moment, UCLA quarterback Kevin Prince is in the game; the next, trainers are talking to him on the sideline.

Prince left Saturday’s 38-34 loss to Houston in the second quarter, after being flipped during a tackle by Cougars defensive back D.J. Hayden. Prince suffered a concussion and will be reevaluated Sunday.

“I blacked out for a couple seconds,” Prince said. “I remember flipping, and the next thing I remember I was on the bench.”

Prince suffered a concussion in 2009 against Washington but returned to start the following week. This is another health issue for him in a long list — knee surgery, broken jaw, separated shoulder.

“It’s very frustrating to go through camp and be prepared, play one quarter and be done,” Prince said.

UCLA Coach Rick Neuheisel committed to playing Prince and Richard Brehaut. That plan was accelerated. Brehaut nearly rallied the Bruins from a 31-14 halftime deficit. He threw two touchdown passes and also scored on a run.

“I thought Richard played well,” Neuheisel said. “There were a couple things at the end of the game we have to work on communication-wise.”

Brehaut started seven games in 2010, and Neuheisel expressed concern at times about his decision making.

“I thought he was pretty sharp today with decision making,” Neuheisel said.

No free kicks

UCLA’s kicking woes intensified Saturday. Kip Smith missed a 32-yard field goal try in the fourth quarter. He also kicked an extra-point try into the UCLA offensive line.

Asked if a change in kickers might come, Neuheisel said, “We’ve got to keep looking at it.”

Running back Johnathan Franklin said, “We’re going to stand behind Kip.”

Franklin had his own struggles with fumbles last season. “Kip has accepted that these things happen and you take responsibility for them,” he said. “That’s the only way to learn from it and change.”

Fauria shines

Tight end Joseph Fauria, who had three receptions for 21 yards last season, had six catches for 110 yards and a touchdown against Houston.

“I earned the trust this summer and showed I had sure hands,” Fauria said. “But it’s not just me. It’s the quarterback and the line doing their jobs so I can get open.”

Offensive coordinator Mike Johnson said, “What he did today really impressed me.”
