The man who fell to his death at Reliant Stadium is identified

Authorities have identified Jonathan Kelly as the Houston man who plummeted to his death after falling off a fifth-floor escalator at Reliant Stadium on Thursday.

Kelly was identified by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.

Kelly, 25, was attending a Houston Texans preseason game against the Minnesota Vikings when he reportedly began horsing around on the escalator, according to the Houston Chronicle. Police, however, could not confirm that the man was acting recklessly before he fell.

Kelly was reportedly attempting to slide down the outside of the handrail when he fell three stories onto the pavement.

One of Kelly’s colleagues, who requested anonymity, told the newspaper that Kelly had worked for about three months as a plant operator at a private water and wastewater utility company. The Chronicle’s source said that Kelly was attending the game with friends.

Kelly was attempting to descend on the escalator from level five to level three when he fell about 60 feet, according to Mark Miller, general manager of SMG Reliant Park, who spoke at a news conference Friday morning.

Sources told the CBS television affiliate in Houston that Kelly was under the influence of alcohol.

Miller said he didn’t have any details about what caused the fall because the investigation was still pending.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family at this moment,” he said.
