Angels’ Erick Aybar, Jordan Walden progressing from injuries

Angels Manager Mike Scioscia said Tuesday night that examinations of injured shortstop Erick Aybar (right big toe) and relief pitcher Jordan Walden (strained right biceps) by team doctor Lewis Yocum were promising.

Walden, out since July 8 with a weakened pitching arm that was related to an issue with a nerve in his neck, will undergo a strength test Friday. If the results are satisfactory, he can begin pitching from a mound in anticipation of being activated from the disabled list.

Scioscia said it remains inconclusive if Aybar will be put on the disabled list after fouling a ball off his toe Saturday, but Scioscia said Aybar is “making progress” and the team is “pleasantly surprised” by his status.

On Monday, Aybar was in a large walking boot and Scioscia said an X-ray Saturday had revealed a “line” on the toe that required further scrutiny.

On Tuesday, Aybar, who batted .325 in his most recent 34 games, was out of the walking boot.

Rookie Jean Segura started at shortstop Tuesday, going 0 for 3 with two strikeouts. The Angels previously used Maicer Izturis at shortstop.
