Several Angels slowed by minor injuries

Angels utility infielder Maicer Izturis is sidelined because of tightness in his legs and reliever Bobby Cassevah has been slowed because of tightness in his throwing shoulder. Neither is expected to play in exhibition games until early next week.

Top outfield prospect Mike Trout, who lost 10 pounds because of flu-like symptoms, still hasn’t played in a game, and he won’t until he gains some of his weight and strength back.

Right-hander Jerome Williams, who entered camp as the leading candidate to win the fifth rotation spot, has not thrown off a mound since he suffered a left hamstring strain last week.

Manager Mike Scioscia said he would need to make at least four starts to build up enough endurance to pitch against the New York Yankees on April 15, the first day of the season the Angels will need a fifth starter. That means Williams would need to return to the mound in Arizona by March 21.

Slugger Kendrys Morales, sidelined for a year and a half because of a broken left ankle, ran on the infield dirt without touching the bases Friday and will repeat the workout Sunday. The next step for the switch-hitter will be to run the bases while hitting and pushing off the bags.

Scioscia said the coaching staff will not try to train Morales to hit the bag with his right foot.

“With your secondary lead, your timing, what your steps are, there are going to be some variables as to which foot is at the bag,” Scioscia said. “The idea is to hit the inside corner of the bag. You don’t want to totally change your stride.

“It’s going to be difficult without totally getting off stride to always hit the bag with his right foot. I don’t think it will be practical, and I don’t think it’s necessary if he’s where he needs to be.
