Shaq to meet with Orlando Magic about general manager job, report says

Shaquille O’Neal, a four-time member of NBA championship teams, may be adding another job to his basketball resume.

O’Neal will meet with Orlando Magic officials next week to talk about becoming the team’s new general manager, according to ESPN.

It’s a long shot considering that O’Neal has no front-office experience. But hey, the man is an honorary U.S. marshal who received a doctorate earlier this month from Barry University. He’s definitely driven.

O’Neal spent four seasons in Orlando after the Magic selected him with the top overall pick in 1992. In 1996, he left for the Lakers via free agency.

If O’Neal gets the job, his first priority would likely be to persuade Dwight Howard to sign a long-term contract with the team.

Complicating the matter would be that O’Neal and Howard have a bit of feud. O’Neal has publicly criticized Howard for adopting the “Superman” nickname and has said that Andrew Bynum is the best big man in the league.

It would be interesting to see how that situation would unfold.

The Magic fired coach Steve Van Gundy on Monday and announced that the team had mutually parted ways with General Manager Otis Smith.

Perhaps O’Neal could be the next superstar to take his talents to Florida.
