Lance Armstrong to be burned in effigy by English town

Lance Armstrong may have been stripped of his Tour de France titles and is losing one sponsor after another in the wake of a doping scandal, but he has been selected by one English town to receive a certain honor.

As if he hasn’t gotten enough bad news lately.

The disgraced American cyclist will be the latest celebrity chosen to be burned in effigy as part of Edenbridge’s famous Bonfire Night celebration Saturday.

The 30-foot-tall effigy is a mocking likeness of Armstrong wearing his once-familiar yellow Tour leader’s jersey and holding a sign that reads, “For sale, racing bike, no longer required.”

It’s a British tradition to light bonfires and set off fireworks on Nov. 5, the date of Guy Fawkes’ failed plot to blow up Parliament in 1605.

Typically an effigy of Fawkes has gone up in flames as part of the celebration, but recently some contemporary figures -- including comedian Russell Brand and soccer star Wayne Rooney -- have receied the dubious honor in Edenbridge.
