Rafael Bejarano rides Rolling Fog to win in Del Mar Futurity

Jockey Rafael Bejarano saved the best for last on Wednesday’s final day of the 37-day Del Mar meeting.

He guided Rolling Fog to a 11/4-length triumph over Know More in the Grade I, $300,000 Del Mar Futurity, giving him a record 13 stakes victories, the most by any jockey in a Del Mar meeting.

“Sweet. Oh, so sweet,” Bejarano said.

He also won the jockey title.

It was the 11th Futurity win for Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert, whose father and mentor, Bill Baffert Sr., died Monday at his home in Nogales, Ariz. He was 88.

Bejarano was pushed to the end by red-hot jockey Joe Talamo, who won his 12th stakes when Dry Summer took the $100,000 Oak Tree Juvenile at one mile on the turf for 2-year-olds. Talamo, 22, finished second in the jockey standings to Bejarano, 52-43, and had 19 wins on the Jimmy Durante turf course. The Louisiana native returns to his home state Saturday to ride the Baffert-trained Blueskiesnrainbows in the $500,000 Super Derby at Louisiana Downs.

Peter Miller won the training title when three of his horses won races to overtake Baffert, 21-20. Miller’s stable had lost 31 consecutive starts before Wednesday.

Rolling Fog, a 2-year-old son of Posse, showed early speed and lots of staying power in winning the seven-furlong race.

“The distance was a bit of a question in my mind with him, but now I see he can handle it,” Bejarano said. “In fact, I think he’ll go longer. A really good race for him. He’s a nice horse.”
