Kyle Casey reportedly leaving Harvard amid cheating scandal

Kyle Casey, a Harvard senior who helped the Crimson reach the NCAA basketball tournament for the first time in 65 years last season, plans to withdraw from the school after being implicated in a widespread academic cheating scandal, SI.com reported early Tuesday morning citing multiple sources.

If the all-Ivy League forward withdraws before Harvard’s fall registration deadline Tuesday, he would miss the entire 2012-13 season but might be able to return to the school and basketball team the following year once the case is settled. If he decides to stay at Harvard this semester and the administration rules against him in the cheating case, he would lose his Ivy League eligibility.

Brandyn Curry, another senior who is a Crimson co-captain with Casey, has also been implicated in the scandal but has not made up his mind about withdrawing, his father, Herman Curry, told SI.com.

Casey, Curry and one other basketball player are among a group of 125 undergraduates -- both athletes and non-athletes -- whose cases are pending review and face a possible one-year suspension from school on charges of academic dishonesty, according to the SI.com report.

Harvard announced last month that its administrative board was investigating allegations that those students “may have committed acts of academic dishonesty, ranging from inappropriate collaboration to outright plagiarism, on a take-home final exam” this past spring for Government 1310: Introduction to Congress.

Casey led the Crimson with 11.4 points and 5.5 rebounds last year. Curry had 7.9 points and 4.9 assists.

The school’s football team is also preparing the possible loss of some players due to the scandal, the Harvard Crimson reported this week.
