Galaxy’s David Beckham leads MLS in jersey sales

The Galaxy may be fourth in Major League Soccer’s Western Conference standings but, based on sales figures released by the MLS on the eve of its business summit in Columbus, Ohio, the team is apparently No. 1 in the hearts of the league’s fans.

The Galaxy is the only team to have the jerseys of three of its players rank among the eight bestselling shirts in MLS. David Beckham’s No. 23 remained the most popular, followed by the jersey of Thierry Henry of the New York Red Bulls.

Galaxy captain Landon Donovan’s No. 10 ranked third, five spots ahead of teammate Robbie Keane. The Galaxy is the only team to have two players in the top six.

Donovan, who has missed the last three games with a strained hamstring, pledged to be back on the field Friday after picking up a goal and an assist during a reserve league game Monday. Donovan played 33 minutes, his first action since participating in the U.S. national team’s win over Mexico last month.

“I’ll be ready for Friday,” Donovan told Internet reporter Adam Serrano. “That’s always dictated by the game, but the thing is, as a forward it’s a little easier than if you are in the midfield doing a lot of doggy work. I should be fine.”

Swedish international Christian Wilhelmsson, whom the Galaxy signed last week, started Monday’s match and could also play Friday against Columbus if his visa work is completed in time.
