Ravens safety Bernard Pollard wants regular officials back

Share

Baltimore Ravens safety Bernard Pollard doesn’t blame the replacement officials who he says “don’t belong” in the NFL.

However, Pollard does openly wonder why after four preseason and two regular-season games, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell hasn’t rectified the situation with the regular game officials and gotten them back onto the field.

“He is quick to jump on board when something else is happening. I don’t know what he’s doing right now, but I don’t see any steps being taken,” Pollard said Thursday. “They should have nipped this thing in the bud immediately. We’re going on our third game. Something needs to be done.”

Asked whether he is concerned about getting fined, Pollard said: “I’m entitled to my own opinion. What does my opinion matter? What is it, two cents and a cup of coffee? I just think for us as players, we have to speak out about this because it’s getting out of hand.”

The NFL and its locked-out officials met the last two days, but a person familiar with the negotiations said Friday the sides remain far apart and no further talks are scheduled.

Fines

Safety Kenny Phillips has been fined $30,000 by the NFL for unnecessary roughness, one of four New York Giants disciplined for their conduct in Sunday’s win over Tampa Bay.

Phillips, a repeat offender who also was fined last season, drew this fine for striking defenseless Buccaneers receiver Vincent Jackson on a pass play. No penalty flag was thrown.

Other Giants disciplined were running back Andre Brown, $15,750 for a horse-collar tackle; and offensive linemen David Baas and Kevin Boothe, fined $7,875 for unnecessary roughness at the end of the game when the Buccaneers plowed into the line as quarterback Eli Manning was taking a knee.

Also fined $21,000 were New England linebacker Jerod Mayo for hitting defenseless Arizona wide receiver Early Doucet and Buffalo safety Da’Norris Searcy for the same offense against Kansas City tight end Kevin Boss.

Seattle receiver Golden Tate drew a $21,000 fine for an illegal blindside block. Tampa Bay linebacker Mason Foster’s hit on Dominek Hixon that resulted in a concussion for the Giants receiver — he missed Thursday night’s game at Carolina — cost Foster $21,000 for striking a defenseless player.

Nighty-night

The New York Jets have brought in sleep specialists to help the players get more rest.

Coach Rex Ryan said Friday that the Jets are always looking for anything to “gain a little advantage.” He thought it important to have the players learn more about getting eight hours of sleep and being well-hydrated, especially with a game at Miami in warm conditions Sunday.
