Otto Porter Jr., Nerlens Noel declare for NBA draft

All-American Otto Porter Jr. announced Monday he is leaving Georgetown after his sophomore season and declaring himself eligible for the NBA draft.

Porter, a 6-foot-8 forward, was the Big East player of the year and finished second in the voting behind Michigan’s Trey Burke for the Associated Press player of the year award.

Also making themselves available for the June 27 draft were Maryland sophomore 7-foot-1 Alex Len, who averaged 11.9 points and had 78 blocks; Georgia 6-5 sophomore guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope; and Kentucky 6-10 freshman Nerlens Noel, who made the decision despite recovering from a torn anterior cruciate ligament.

Florida International says it has hired Anthony Evans as its men’s basketball coach, and will introduce him at a news conference Tuesday. Evans had been at Norfolk State for the last six seasons, going 99-94 in that span.

Purdue Coach Matt Painter announced that redshirt sophomore guard Anthony Johnson will transfer to another school.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL: USC lists depth chart

USC Coach Lane Kiffin released an end-of-spring depth chart and, as anticipated, did not list a starting quarterback.

Third-year sophomores Max Wittek and Cody Kessler and freshman Max Browne were listed as co-starters. A decision will not come until training camp, which is tentatively scheduled to begin Aug. 3.

Kiffin said the Trojans probably would have 69 scholarship players on the roster when they open the season Aug. 29 at Hawaii. NCAA sanctions limit the Trojans to 75, 10 fewer than the allowable maximum.

Freshman tailback Justin Davis enjoyed perhaps the biggest breakout during the 15 spring workouts and parlayed that into a co-starter listing with senior Silas Redd and sophomore Tre Madden.

The most curious position was right tackle, where Kiffin listed redshirt freshman Chad Wheeler as a co-starter with senior two-year starter Kevin Graf. Wheeler was sidelined for most of spring practice after knee surgery. Kiffin said Graf “had an up-and-down spring.”

Aundrey Walker, who struggled last season and at times during spring workouts, remains the starter at left tackle, with walk-on Nathan Guertler as the backup. Kiffin said redshirt freshman Zach Banner is “a right tackle only and he has a ways to go.”

Dion Bailey, a two-year starter at linebacker who sat out spring practice while recovering from shoulder surgery, has been moved to safety, the position he played his first season at USC.

Running back Rushel Shell, who played at Pittsburgh last season, will transfer to UCLA.

The 6-foot, 215-pound Shell gained 641 yards rushing as a freshman last season. He was considered one of the top running backs in the nation as a senior at Aliquippa (Pa.) Hopewell High, where he gained a Pennsylvania state record 9,078 yards.

Shell will sit out the 2013 season and have three years of eligibility remaining.

ETC.: Griner tops WNBA draft

The Phoenix Mercury selected Baylor’s Brittney Griner with the top pick in the WNBA draft.

Elena Delle Donne of Delaware was selected second by Chicago and Skylar Diggins of Notre Dame was selected third by Tulsa.

The two-time AP player of the year, Griner finished as the second all-time scorer in women’s NCAA history, with 3,283 points. She is the top shot-blocker ever, breaking both the men’s and women’s college marks with 748. She also had a record 18 dunks — including 11 this season. Mark Cuban of the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks has said he is interested in drafting Griner.

Steve Tambellini is out as general manager of the Edmonton Oilers, who are the verge of missing the NHL playoffs for a seventh consecutive season. Tambellini was in his fifth season with Edmonton.

New York Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis reported for the first day of the team’s voluntary off-season conditioning program after undergoing an MRI exam but did not speak to reporters.

Inbee Park took over the top spot in the women’s golf ranking, ending Stacy Lewis’ four-week run at No. 1.

The Galaxy reportedly is one of eight teams that would take part in an international soccer tournament planned this summer that also would include several European clubs. The tournament would be called the International Champions Cup, include matches in U.S. cities and culminate with two days of competition at Sun Life Stadium in Miami in early August, the Miami Herald and some other media outlets reported. The Galaxy declined to comment.

Teams from England, Italy and Spain also are expected to be in the tournament, and a formal announcement might be made later this week, the reports said.
