Sons of Joe Montana, Cris Carter to try out for fathers’ ex-teams
The sons of a pair of football Hall of Famers did not get drafted this past weekend, but Nate Montana and Duron Carter still may be able to follow in their fathers’ footsteps into the NFL.
And with their dads’ former teams, no less.
Montana has accepted an invitation to take part in a three-day rookie minicamp with the San Francisco 49ers, the team his father, Joe Montana, led to four Super Bowl victories. Nate Montana, whose agent says his client turned down invites from three other teams for the opportunity, participated in the 49ers’ local pro day earlier this month.
Carter also will take part in a three-day rookie minicamp with the Minnesota Vikings, the team his father, Cris Carter, played for while making eight straight Pro Bowls during his 16-year pro career. Duron Carter turned down an invite with the defending Super Bowl champion Baltimore Ravens to try out for the Vikings.
Both second generation players spent some time on their fathers’ former college teams without finding much success. Nate Montana was a backup for Notre Dame — where Joe Montana passed for 4,121 yards with 25 touchdowns and 25 interceptions in three seasons — for one season, throwing for 116 yards with no touchdowns and one interception in three appearances.
He was also a backup at Pasadena City College and the University of Montana before making nine starts for Division II West Virginia Weslyan his senior season, passing for 2,480 yards and 19 touchdowns.
Duron Carter played for his father’s alma mater, Ohio State, in 2009, catching 13 passes for 176 yards and one touchdown, but was academically ineligible for the Rose Bowl. He caught 44 passes for 690 yards and 10 touchdowns in nine games for Coffeyville (Kan.) Community College in 2010.
He transferred to Alabama and then Florida International but didn’t play a down for either school.
Both players still have a tough road to the NFL, first having to receive a contract from the teams and then making it to and through training camp.
