Dodgers and Giants tie, 8-8, in first Cactus League meeting

Share

Dodgers 8, San Francisco 8

AT THE PLATE: Alex Castellanos hit a three-run home run in the sixth inning off Ramon Ramirez. With the Dodgers lacking power on their bench, the 26-year-old Castellanos could have an outside chance at making the roster or earning an in-season call-up. Castellanos played in center field, as Manager Don Mattingly wanted to see if he could fill in there if Matt Kemp is injured. Nonroster outfielder Jeremy Moore, a former Angels prospect, had two doubles and drove in two runs.

ON THE MOUND: Josh Beckett struck out three in two scoreless innings in his spring debut. Beckett has been working with Hall of Famer Sandy Koufax this spring. “A lot of it is basically just trying to get more direct to the plate,” Beckett said. Also pitching for the first time this spring were closer Brandon League and setup man Kenley Jansen. League gave up a solo homer to Brett Pill.

EXTRA BASES: Third baseman Luis Cruz was scratched from the lineup because of stomach flu.

UP NEXT: vs. Chicago Cubs on Wednesday, noon PST at Hohokam Stadium in Mesa, Ariz. On the air: TV: none; Radio: none.
