If there were ever a time for the Washington Redskins to run a “hurry-up” offense, that time is now.

Quarterback Robert Griffin III had surgery Wednesday to repair two damaged ligaments in his right knee, and now the clock is ticking on whether he’ll be ready for the start of next season.

The extent of damage to the knee has not been officially revealed, although the Associated Press cites an unnamed source who says Griffin sustained a torn lateral collateral ligament as well as damage to his anterior cruciate ligament.

Depending on the severity, that type of injury could require a recovery period of nine to 12 months, with no guarantee the player will be back to normal immediately upon return. However, Minnesota running back Adrian Peterson overcame two torn ligaments to return this season within nine months, then came within nine yards of breaking the league’s single-season rushing record.

So is Griffin the same type of physical freak that Peterson is? Considering his attitude and track record, Griffin will do everything he can to be back for next season’s opener.

Before his surgery, which was performed in Florida by Dr. James Andrews, Griffin tweeted: “Thank you for your prayers and support. I love God, my family, my team, the fans, & I love this game. See you guys next season.”
