Renee’s Titan wins at 20-1

Renee’s Titan rallied to win the $150,000 Santa Ynez Stakes by three-quarters of a length as a 20-1 longshot on Monday at Santa Anita.

Ridden by Tyler Baze, Renee’s Titan ran 61/2 furlongs in 1:16.14 and paid $43.80, $7.80 and $4.20 while ending a six-race skid.

Beholder, who the Eclipse Award as champion filly last weekend, wound up second in her 3-year-old debut. She returned $2.20 and $2.10, and Dawn’s Charm was another nose back in third and paid $3.20 to show.

Baze rallied Renee’s Titan from six lengths behind at six furlongs despite losing his whip in the upper stretch.

In the $75,000 San Pedro Stakes for 3-year-olds, Distinctiv Passion won by 11/2 lengths.

Varejao is out for the season

Cleveland Cavaliers center Anderson Varejao will miss the rest of the season after developing a blood clot in his lower right lung.

Varejao, who underwent surgery on a torn leg muscle Jan. 10, remains hospitalized at the Cleveland Clinic. The Cavaliers said he was admitted Thursday and will probably remain there for several more days as he receives treatment. Varejao is expected to make a full recovery, but he will remain on blood-thinning medication for at least three months, the team said.

The only thing stopping the Sacramento Kings from a sale and move to Seattle is approval by NBA owners.

The Maloof family has agreed to sell the Kings to a Seattle group led by investor Chris Hansen, the league confirmed in a statement. The deal is still pending a vote by the NBA Board of Governors.

A person familiar with the decision said that Hansen’s group will buy 65% of the franchise, which is valued at a total price of $525 million, and move the team to Seattle and restore the SuperSonics name. The deal will cost the Hansen group a little more than $340 million. The Maloofs will have no stake in the team.

The person spoke to the Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the deal was waiting approval.

Miami coaches face allegations

Two Miami assistant coaches have been told they will be charged with “unethical conduct” when the NCAA presents the Hurricanes’ athletic department with its notice of allegations, said two people familiar with the situation.

The people spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because neither the NCAA nor Miami has announced the contents of the long-awaited letter, which the Hurricanes might receive at any time. The people say the coaches will be cited for violating NCAA bylaw 10.1, a broad rule that covers conduct and cooperating with investigations. One of the coaches has been told to expect arrival of an actual copy of the allegations Tuesday, one person told the AP.

Ohio State Coach Thad Matta has agreed to a revised contract that will give him a 10% increase to more than $3.2 million annually and includes academic bonuses and more stringent wording about NCAA violations.

With years he had already earned through job performance, the five-time Big Ten champion coach will be under contract through July 2019.

Matta’s first eight Ohio State teams each won at least 20 games; the Buckeyes are 13-4 this season.

Outfielder David Murphy and the Texas Rangers agreed to a one-year contract worth $5,775,000.

The deal came three days after Murphy and the team exchanged salary arbitration figures. They agreed in the middle after Murphy sought $6.5 million and the team offered $5.05 million.

The Houston Astros signed left-hander Erik Bedard to a minor league contract and invited him to spring training.
