Ducks beat St. Louis, tie franchise record with 11th home win in row

Ryan Getzlaf used his hind section and his stick to help give the Ducks their record-tying home victory Sunday.

First, the Ducks’ captain watched a hard slap shot by teammate Francois Beauchemin strike the back of his upper leg and careen directly to teammate Bobby Ryan for a tying goal in the third period.

“Best pass I had all night,” Getzlaf joked.

Two minutes later, Getzlaf unloaded a power-play shot that teammate Corey Perry touched past St. Louis goaltender Jaroslav Halak for the decisive goal in the Ducks’ 4-2 victory.

Perry added an empty-net goal in the final minute.

It was the 11th consecutive victory at Honda Center for the Ducks (18-3-3), matching a franchise record previously accomplished from Dec. 8, 2009, to Feb. 10, 2010.

“We want teams to know when they come in here it’s going to be a tough time,” Ducks Coach Bruce Boudreau said.

Part of that strength is the Ducks’ ability to rally. They are now 9-2-1 when the opponent scores the game’s first goal.

“When you’re behind or close, you stick to your confidence, to the system that works,” Getzlaf said. “Good teams stay within their structure no matter.”

St. Louis (13-10-2) took a 2-1 lead less than two minutes into the third period on a power-play goal by the Blues’ leading scorer, Patrik Berglund.

Getzlaf was the most vocal Duck to argue the dubious tripping penalty on Ryan that set up the man advantage. Ryan called the whistle “horrible.”

Whether it was more the hockey gods executing justice or the padding of Getzlaf’s 221-pound frame, the Beauchemin slap shot that deflected off Getzlaf slid perfectly back to Ryan, who buried his eighth goal and slammed himself into the glass in celebration, the announced crowd of 17,174 roaring.

Beauchemin assisted on all three goals, increasing his season total to 14. Ryan matched his career-high points streak of seven games with the goal.

“There’s a belief … we’re going to find a way to get things done,” Ryan said.

A tripping penalty against Blues defenseman Roman Polak — one of seven penalties against St. Louis — preceded Perry’s winning goal.

The Ducks have scored 11 power-play goals in the last nine games to rank as the NHL’s most productive team in the category.

They also scored short-handed when Andrew Cogliano’s breakaway effort in the second period made it a 1-1 tie.

Cogliano took passes from teammates Ben Lovejoy and Emerson Etem, flipped the puck forward and sped past the Blues’ David Perron before firing the shot to the right of goalie Jaroslav Halak.

St. Louis came to Honda Center after scoring 14 combined goals in their prior three games. They ended the Ducks’ 140-plus-minute scoreless streak six minutes into the first period, when a shot by Wade Redden was deflected past goalie Jonas Hiller by Ryan Reaves for a 1-0 Blues’ lead.

“Up or down,” Hiller said after a 29-save effort gave him a fifth straight home victory, “everybody’s confident we will win.”

The Ducks start a three-game trip to Minnesota, Dallas and St. Louis on Tuesday.
