Lakers’ week in review

Share

The 2013-14 NBA calendar year began Monday.

The big question for the Lakers is the free agency of center Dwight Howard.

General Manager Mitch Kupchak said Howard is “our future.” The Lakers put up billboards in a few key locations calling for Howard to “Stay.”

The Lakers also digitally mocked up the Beverly Hills Hotel with a Howard jersey.

Kobe Bryant said he wants Howard to return but doesn’t want to push the center. Phil Jackson also said he would like to see Howard back with the Lakers.

Meanwhile the Houston Rockets, possibly the biggest threat to land Howard, found a trade for Thomas Robinson -- opening up cap space to give Howard a maximum offer.

The Lakers were told they would be the final team to have the opportunity to talk with Howard.

Metta World Peace opted into his contract for next season, but will the Lakers keep him?

The Lakers took their contract option to keep guard Jodie Meeks and gave Robert Sacre a qualifying offer (making him a restricted free agent). The team chose not to make Darius Morris, Andrew Goudelock and Devin Ebanks restricted.

Chris Duhon was waived, but he’ll receive $1.5 million for next season.

The Lakers drafted Duke forward Ryan Kelly with the 48th pick in the 2013 NBA draft. Though Kelly is recovering from a foot injury, when healthy he has a capable shooting touch.

Time Warner Cable Media released a video of Jeanie Buss accepting an award on behalf of her father, the late Jerry Buss.

New Clippers Coach Doc Rivers said he looked forward to seeing the Lakers and Clippers renew their rivalry next season.

A change of plans for former Lakers forward Mark Madsen. Instead of coaching the team’s D-League affiliate (D-Fenders), he’ll join Coach Mike D’Antoni’s staff as a player-development coach.

Finally, Kobe Bryant said his Achilles’ tendon is improving after April surgery.
