Phil Jackson to advise Detroit Pistons on coaching search

Share

While the fans at Staples Center ended the season chanting “We want Phil,” it appears the Lakers and Phil Jackson are nowhere near a reunion.

Jackson has agreed to “serve in an advisory capacity” with the Detroit Pistons as owner Tom Gores searches for a new head coach, according to Keith Langlois of NBA.com.

“Phil Jackson is a friend and one of the best minds in the business,” Gores said. “We are thrilled to have him as an advisor as we make some very important decisions for this franchise. Joe [Dumars] and I discussed this and he and I are in full agreement that this is a great opportunity.”

Jackson won’t have a formal position with the Pistons.

“Tom and I discussed using a consultant as part of our decision-making process in our search for a head coach, and we feel that Phil Jackson is a great resource to use,” said Dumars, president of basketball operations. “I look forward to talking with Phil next week.”

The Pistons recently fired Lawrence Frank as coach. Jackson has been reportedly seeking a team to work with in an executive capacity. He might not return to the sidelines in a coaching capacity after his second stint with the Lakers.

Additionally, the Lakers have been clear they intend to keep Coach Mike D’Antoni, who recently purchased a home in Manhattan Beach.
