Racing! Where no question is too dumb

Share

Hello, my name is John Cherwa, welcome back to our horse racing newsletter and my boss is going to let me start using your names.

I got some pretty good response to yesterday’s rant about this sport not all working in the same direction. And, with that, as I encourage, were more suggestions as to how to make this newsletter better.

One of the tightropes I walk is determining when information is too elementary to you subscribers. But I get a lot of requests for some of the basics.

It was also a suggestion of my newsletter boss, Houston Mitchell, the impresario of the Dodgers Newsletter (if you don’t get it and are a Dodgers fan, what are you waiting for? Sign up here. And I’m told the annoying pop-up goes away Monday.)

Anyway, Houston doesn’t really know horse racing or pari-mutuel betting. But he does know horses. I remember being in Rio for the last Olympics and was meeting with some media reps from USA Equestrian. Their first question: “Do you know Houston Mitchell?” Uh, yeah, I know him.

Apparently Houston is some guru in equestrian media circles. Who knew?

Nonetheless, he has encouraged me getting reader questions that hopefully can be answered, if not by me, then by one of the multi-millions of people who know more than me. As an incentive, Houston has also allowed me to take the training wheels off this newsletter.

We’re very careful when it comes to emails. We should verify each one, but we really don’t have the time. So, such as when I asked for what you were thankful for, I didn’t include your names.

OK, new rules. I will start using names if you include your real name, but I won’t accept your email pseudonym. But, please, none of that Jim Nasium stuff or don’t even try using that Haywood guy. This isn’t an episode of “The Simpsons” with Bart calling for someone at Moe’s Tavern.

So, send along some things you would like to know although there is no guarantee that any question will be answered. We have to be judicious. Also, nothing so complicated that I need a Caltech scientist to decipher. But stuff you would like to know, and if you don’t want your name used, we won’t. In case you forgot, or never read to the bottom, it’s johnacherwa@gmail.com.

Del Mar review

No surprise that Mike Smith guided his horse to a perfect trip, but Manitoulin showed plenty of resolve in deep stretch to beat a flying Chicago Style to win the Grade 2 $200,000 Hollywood Turf Cup at Del Mar.

Tequila Joe went to the lead and Smith guided Manitoulin to just outside him in perfect stalking position. Manitoulin poked his head in front a couple of times in 1½-mile turf race, but he didn’t take the lead until the head of the stretch.

Chicago Style was looking for room and once he got to the outside he unleashed a furious rally only to come up a neck short.

Flamboyant finished third, ahead of Tequila Joe. Manitoulin paid $10.40, $4.80 and $3.40.

Del Mar preview

Really good penultimate card for this meeting at Del Mar. There are three graded stakes races on the nine-race card starting at 12:30 p.m. And, if that’s not enough, there is Pick Six carryover of $148,562.

The highlight is the Grade 1 $300,000 Hollywood Derby, going as the seventh race at about 3:30 p.m. Sharp Samurai is the 5-2 favorite, having won six of eight races this year, including five of his last six. He is two for two at Del Mar, including wins in the La Jolla Handicap and Del Mar Derby. The 3-year-old gelding has Gary Stevens aboard for trainer Mark Glatt. The race is 1 1/8 miles over the turf course.

“He’s doing remarkably well,” Glatt told Del Mar publicity. “His races have been getting a little bit better each time and there’s no reason to think that he won’t run equally as well tomorrow. Hopefully he will.”

The fifth race, at about 2:30 p.m., will be the Grade 3 $100,000 Native Diver Stakes over 1 1/8 miles on the dirt. Mubtaahij, one of four runners for trainer Bob Baffert in Breeders’ Cup Classic, is the 2-1 favorite in the Native Diver. After an unimpressive 2016 and 2017, except for winning the Awesome Again Stakes at Santa Anita, finished eighth in the Classic.

Finally, in the ninth race, at about 4:30, is the Grade 2 $100,000 Jimmy Durante Stakes for 2-year-old fillies at 1 mile on the Jimmy Durante turf course. The hunch bet would be to play the horse with the biggest nose. But short of that, Fatale Bere is the 4-1 tepid morning-line favorite. She has won three of five races and finished fifth in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf.

Bob Ike’s DM pick of the day

NINTH RACE: No. 2 Daddy Is A Legend (9-2)

Filly from George Weaver barn could not have been more impressive breaking her maiden at Keeneland going nine furlongs on turf, making a prolonged, sweeping move to open up many lengths, then cruising home. Before that she finished second behind eventual BC Juvenile Fillies Turf winner Rushing Fall in a maiden race at Belmont Park. She is a stone runner but will need racing luck rallying from behind in a full field of 13 grass runners.

Friday result: Beer Tap didn't accelerate when needed at top of the stretch, then got blocked and eliminated behind the stopping leader when taking up badly in mid-stretch. The running line is worse than the effort but he wasn't good enough when he needed to be.

Bob Ike is a Partner/VP of Horsebills.com and the proprietor of BobIkePicks.com (full-card picks, 3 Best Plays and betting strategy).

Ed Burgart’s LA pick of the day

SEVENTH RACE: No. 5 Flying Jess (5-2)

She was a solid third after two-month layoff vs. prior $8,000 winner Run Raging Rhino Run in last from the rail and gets a nice post switch. She drops a class notch to the level at which she last won six outs ago. Blown A Way, the 9-5 morning-line favorite, appears to have peaked and her three wins this year came vs. softer fields.
