Racing! Let’s get through this day without being negative

Share

Hello, my name is John Cherwa and welcome back to our horse racing newsletter as we count down the days to the Pegasus World Cup.

We are less than a week away from the Pegasus World Cup at Gulfstream with the race lacking the star power of last year even though it is worth a lot more money. And, Gun Runner, the presumptive favorite, is really of no value to the viewing public if he wins the race because he’s retiring.

They have lowered the bottom ticket for customers to $75 instead of $100 and upped the individual horse payout to $650,000 for every entrant. So, the most the race can cost an entrant is $350,000.

The Stronach Group has added $4 million to the purse and Frank Stronach, the group’s patriarch, had to buy four spots to fill the 12-horse race. That’s $8 million, although there is at least $2.6 million he will get back. I usually get critical email (even more than normal) when I say something nice about the Stronachs. But, you have to give them some credit. Consider this:

--Santa Anita is worth much more as property than as a racetrack, yet they keep racing, for now.

--Under the stewardship of Tim Ritvo, TSG has revitalized racing in South Florida and Maryland.

--California needs better breeding stock, so Frank moves some of his inventory out here.

--He’s trying to give the U.S. a marque race, even more lucrative than the Dubai World Cup, and it seems to be costing more money than he thought, yet he persists. It’s even in the perfect time spot, just before the breeding season opens, but it’s struggling for entrants.

Yes, I make fun of his $30-million hood ornament in the Gulfstream parking and sure they do some things wrong. But think of the spot the industry would be in without him.

Baffert in the Pegasus

Defending Pegasus winning trainer Bob Baffert has two entrants this year: Collected and West Coast, who finished second and third in the Breeders’ Cup Classic behind Gun Runner.

Both of them worked over the Santa Anita surface on Sunday morning and will board a plane with Peter Eurton’s Giant Expectations on Wednesday morning and fly to South Florida for Saturday’s $16-million race.

Baffert was pleased with both horses, especially West Coast.

“West Coast went really well,” Baffert told Ed Golden of Santa Anita. “He’s coming into the race without any bumps in the road, like any other big race. I’m pretty happy. We gave him a stiff work the other day (6 furlongs in a bullet 1:12) but [Sunday] he was on it. He wanted to do more. He looked great coming off the track. I felt really good about his work.”

Collected appeared to be the better horse until a lackluster showing in the San Antonio, won by Giant Expectations.

“We didn’t really super-crank him for it,” Baffert said. “We’re taking the Pegasus with a different approach. He’ll be ready.”

Santa Anita review

It was one of only three Sunday’s during the meet with no stakes racing. It was also the first Sunday where it appeared that smaller field sizes were creeping into the card. The best of what was on display was a $56,000 allowance race on the turf over a mile.

It was an incredible finish with Lostintranzlation beat Speakers and Dreamy Gal by a nose. There was a dead heat for second. Lostintranzlation paid $8.20, $3.80 and $3.20.

Big races review

A look at graded stakes or races worth more $100,000 or more on Sunday.

Aqueduct: $100,000 Alex M. Robb Stakes, NY-breds, 4 and up, 1 1/8 miles. Winner: Control Group ($2.90)

Aqueduct: $100,000 Ladies Handicap, fillies and mares 4 and up, 1 1/18 miles. Winner: Just Got Out ($8.00)
