Racing! Can Gun Runner overcome his bad post in the Pegasus?

Share

Hello, my name is John Cherwa and welcome back to our horse racing newsletter as we come upon the first really strong day of racing in the year.

Yes, it’s Pegasus day in South Florida and Cal Cup Day at Santa Anita. I will be down at Gulfstream on Saturday and Eric (Manny) Sondheimer will be in Arcadia for all those great Cal-bred races.

For a preview of the Pegasus, I’m going to direct you to the story we have in print and online. All you have to do is just click here.

As for the big Cal Cup races, there will be some quick previews down below.

Now on to one of our more popular features, but given the great card at Gulfstream, we’re going to go there for today’s tutorial.

A handicapping lesson

Here’s this week’s contribution from Rob Henie of the WCHR (West Coast Handicapping Report) and the ECHR (East Coast Handicapping Report). The thinking is by breaking down a race in detail you can learn to handicap like the pros.

Today, Rob looks at the fifth race at Gulfstream:

This is a maiden special weight at 1 1/16 miles on the turf, and we’re gonna look at some well-meant runners going long on the sod at first asking. First off, it’s important to remember, when a competent trainer goes long at first asking, it’s rarely to “give the horse the race.” If a horse is “short,” meaning, not ready physically for the distance, it can lead to a tired runner, and that’s when horses are more prone to injuries, hanging on a wrong lead, too tired to switch leads, etc. can open the door to injuries when leaning on one side too long, especially when tired. It’s one thing to come up a bit tired going 5 ½, where you can gradually work into a longer distance, but it’s another to go long at first asking and completely leave your runner open to injury and a bad first experience if not ready. With this in mind, top selection is HAMPTON POINT (#5), who debuts for Toner, a guy who’s good going long, and rarely leaves his runners short. The fact he goes here is encouraging, as is the presence of Castellano. Also, never mind the slow drills, this is typical for Jim, indicative of a horse asked for nothing early in the work, instead, finishing late, producing a slow time due to the very slow opening splits, not accounting for the final portion of the drill. Also, when you notice slow drills in a maiden special weight going long, generally it’s not a bad thing, as opposed to slow drills going six furlongs when placed at the bottom claiming levels which means, “he’s showing nothing,” let’s run at the bottom. Understanding intention and placement can give you a better idea as to the meaning of the work pattern. Look for a decent late effort here today. GOLDEN CHALLENGE (#14) is another debuting today, from the Nicks barn, with Rosario up. Drills are slow, but would Ralph be sending long on the sod, if needing the race with a $425,000 purchase? The fact Joel rides as well is a good thing, not riding for Lewis, whom he rode for in So. Cal for years, and still does with the right horses, giving this one a bit more credence, and a bit less to the Lewis firster in here (the #12 horse).

Race Outlook: Multiple runners would be useful.

Maiden Listed Condition: MSW

ECHR Estimated Level: $30,000

(this is a powerful category for us, understanding what type of race this really is….For example, we’ll often bring to light a MSW race where one horse exits a listed MSW race which was closer to an $8,000 bunch, while another exits a listed MSW race which is closer to a $40,000 group … not all races, especially maiden races, are created equal, and this is sharp info to have on your side….see #3 Empirically below)

Win Contenders (order of preference): 5-14-6

X Out Runners (eliminating on the win end): 1,11

Negative Notes:

6 Neepawa - Very nice action, striding out beautifully, we’ll respect off the freshening for Casse.

Negative Notes:

3 Empirically - Will take play, but we know better, finishing a close second against listed MSW types, but we had appraised that group as $5,000 types, a bad group. Looking to beat his 7-2 morning line.

First Timers:

12 River Birch - If live today, or with ability, Rosario likely would be riding here.

TOP PICK: HAMPTON POINT (#5 12-1 Castellano)

SECOND CHOICE: GOLDEN CHALLENGE (#14 15-1 Rosario)

The West Coast Handicapping Report can be found at https://www.westcoasthorseracing.com It has been endorsed by leading trainers, handicappers and industry sources.

Santa Anita review

No stakes races on Friday, but the 6-furlong feature saw a dominating performance by Captain Scotty, winning the $56,000 purse race by 5 ¼. The 4 year old bears some watching as he won his maiden race in December by 6 3/4 lengths. He’s trained by Peter Miller, who was in Florida on Thursday night at the Eclipse Awards (are they over yet?), and was ridden by Flavien Prat.

His win didn’t come as a surprise to many as he paid $4.20, $3.00 and $2.40. Miller also had the second-place horse Big League. Coils Gold was third.

Santa Anita preview

There is a special 11:45 a.m. post today with 10 races. Nine of them are restricted to Cal-breds.

The first of four stakes races will be the $150,000 Sunshine Millions Filly and Mare Sprint, going at about 12:45 p.m. It’s over the 6 ½ furlong downhill turf course. The 9-5 favorite is Miss Sunset, who reeled off three straight wins before finishing eighth in the La Brea to Eclipse Award winner Unique Bella. She picks up another new jockey, and a good one, in Flavien Prat. The second favorite is Barbara Beatrice at 3-1. She loves the downhill course and has four wins in 10 starts at Santa Anita.

Next up is the $150,000 California Cup Sprint at around 1:15 p.m. It’s a Cal-bred race for older horses over 6 furlongs. The big name here is Masochistic, who is better known to have lost his purse money over a controversial drug positive after a second-place finish in the 2016 Breeders’ Cup Sprint. He only raced twice in 2017 but is the 4-5 favorite. Mike Smith is his regular rider but he’s in Florida, so one of Bob Baffert’s new favorites—Drayden Van Dyke—gets the call. Edwards Going Left, for John Sadler and Hronis Racing, is the second favorite at 5-2, having won six of 10 lifetime starts and four of seven at Santa Anita.

The $100,000 California Sprint Stakes is scheduled for around 2:25 p.m. It’s also down the hillside turf course but restricted to 3 year old Cal-breds. There is no big favorite in this race with Heck Yeah, again for Baffert and Van Dyke, being the tepid 7-2 favorite. This colt has only run once, winning by 5 ¼ lengths at Los Alamitos. Cono and Bookies Luck are at 4-1 as the second choices. Cono has won only once in seven starts, but that was at Santa Anita. Bookies Luck has won three of his last five races and gets turf expert Kent Desormeaux in the saddle.

The big stakes is the $200,000 Unusual Heat Turf Classic for older horses going 1 1/8 miles on the turf. Funny, I always thought a race that was a Classic had to be 1 ¼ miles. Post is around 3:40 p.m. It’s got a pretty good field of nine with He Will being the 2-1 favorite for Jerry Hollendorfer and Rafael Bejarano. He Will is a veteran campaigner with six wins in 21 starts. He’s four of 14 on the turf. Rye and Smokey Image are 3-1. Rye runs for reasonably hot trainer William Morey. His last two races were at Golden Gate and he has five wins in 10 tries on the turf. Smokey Image broke on to scene two years ago with lots of promise. He even ran in the Santa Anita Derby. But, despite a spectacular performance on Cal Cup day, he’s never duplicated that kind of success as he’s moved up and down in class.

Bob Ike’s SA play of the day

EIGHTH RACE: No. 4 Camino Del Paraiso (5-1)

NoCal invader from O.J. Jauregui stable should fire a big shot in this 1 1/8 mile Cal-bred turf stakes. He uncorked a huge, wide rally on the far turn last time before tiring late and was very game in defeat one back. He needs a waiting ride to be most effective and figures to get patient handling from top turf rider Flavien Prat. Main danger is his Bay Area nemesis Rye.

Friday Result: Mesut ran very well but settled for second behind favorite Incensed in the seventh race.

Bob Ike is a Partner/VP of Horsebills.com and the proprietor of BobIkePicks.com (full-card picks, 3 Best Plays and betting strategy).

Ed Burgart’s LA pick of the day

THIRD RACE: No. 3 Couldashouldadid (4-1)

He is an eight-time winner who fits restricted non-winners-of-two conditions nicely and figures to control the pace from his favorable post. He had speed sharpened at 4 furlongs in last fourth-place try and won five races with claiming tags of $4,000 or less last year. His six opponents have combined for only 14 victories.
