U.S. Olympian swimmer Missy Franklin to visit Cal, USC, Georgia

LONDON -- Missy Franklin, the teenage star of the United States women’s swim team, said Thursday she has scheduled recruiting visits to California, USC and Georgia.

Franklin, by far the biggest fish in next year’s recruiting pool, is expected to win multiple gold medals in the London Olympics. She wants to swim for a college team rather than turn pro, a decision that could cost her more than $1 million.

Cal has won the last two NCAA women’s swimming championships, and three of the last four. Cal Coach Teri McKeever is the head coach of the U.S. women’s Olympic team.

Georgia finished second and USC third at this year’s NCAA championships. Stanford finished fourth, but Franklin said she does not plan to consider the school because its coach resigned earlier this month.

Franklin, who will be a senior this fall at Regis Jesuit High School in Aurora, Colo., said she could decide to take additional recruiting visits.
