First quarter

Quarterback Case Keenum completed a 20-yard pass to Kenny Britt in his first attempt of the game. On the next play Keenum threw to Britt again, but the deep pass fell incomplete. Britt was able to draw pass interference from Chiefs safety Ron Parker on the throw, which moved the ball 41 yards. It was a nice sell from Britt on a ball slightly underthrown by Keenum. The play set up three consecutive carries for Todd Gurley, one for a touchdown.

On his second play of the game quarterback Jared Goff tripped over the foot of left guard Cody Wichmann. Goff fumbled the ball and defensive tackle Dontari Poe recovered it. The Chiefs kicked a field goal five plays later to take a 17-14 lead.

The Rams committed nine penalties for 44 yards. Two came on one play. Linebacker Akeem Ayers was flagged for lining up in the neutral zone and by the end of the play, which was nullified because of the penalty, cornerback LaMarcus Joyner drew a flag for a personal foul. Joyner got into a scuffle with receiver Jeremy Maclin in the end zone. Joyner and Maclin both were ejected from the game. Joyner is competing with Coty Sensabaugh to start opposite of Trumaine Johnson.

Third quarter

Receiver Bradley Marquez, listed behind Britt on the depth chart, caught a pass from Goff for a one-yard loss. Marquez was injured on the play and needed assistance off the field. He did not put any pressure on his right leg.

Chiefs right tackle Jah Reid drew a penalty for a chop block and defensive end Ethan Westbrooks, William Hayes’ backup, was injured in the play.

Fourth quarter

Running back Malcolm Brown, listed third on the depth chart, rushed for 28 yards in consecutive carries to put the Rams on the Chiefs’ 10-yard line. Goff completed a 10-yard pass to Brown for a touchdown and a one-point lead, 21-20.

Quinton Coples sacked and forced Chiefs backup quarterback Aaron Murray to fumble. The Chiefs recovered but were unable to sustain the drive and punted four plays later.

Later in the quarter, Coples forced Murray to fumble again and the Rams recovered. It appeared they would be able to run out the clock, but they were forced to punt. The Rams acquired Coples as a free agent after he played outside linebacker with the Jets, where he was a former first-round pick, and Dolphins.
