College basketball: Chase Jeter injures ankle in No. 1 Duke’s bounce-back win

Top-ranked Duke bounced back from its loss to Kansas by beating Penn State, but watched another player go down with an injury.

Freshman Frank Jackson led five players in double figures with 17 points and Amile Jefferson added 16 points and 15 rebounds to lead the Blue Devils to a 78-68 win Saturday in the Hall of Fame Tip-Off tournament at Uncasville, Conn.

Sophomore Chase Jeter rolled his left ankle in the first half and didn’t return.

Tony Carr had 20 points and Shep Garner added 15 to lead Penn State (2-2).

Jeter went down under the Penn State basket while going for a rebound. The 6-foot-10 sophomore was on the floor for several minutes before being helped off the court. His injury came minutes after Grayson Allen left the game, favoring the right foot he hurt in the recent loss to Kansas.

Allen went back to the locker room, but returned to the floor a few minutes later. He finished with 12 points.

at No. 6 Indiana 87, Liberty 48: James Blackmon Jr. made five three-pointers and had 20 points to help the Hoosiers rout the Flames. Indiana (3-0) scored the first nine points and built a 32-point lead in the first half.

No. 17 St. Mary’s 61: at Dayton 57: Jock Landale scored 15 points off moves to the basket and Calvin Hermanson had 16 points from the perimeter, forming an inside-outside attack that swept the Gaels to a victory over the Flyers in St. Mary’s first road game.

No. 21 Rhode Island 76, No. 24 Cincinnati 71: The Rams had their first real test of the season — and passed. E.C. Matthews hit two late three-pointers and finished with 18 points in Rhode Island’s comeback victory over the Bearcats. Kuren Iverson added 15 points and 10 rebounds, and Jared Terrell and Hassan Martin each scored 14 points for Rhode Island (4-0), which will face top-ranked Duke for the Tip-Off title Sunday.

at UC Riverside 96, Fresno Pacific 50: Freshman Dikymbe Martin scored 26 points off the bench, making 11 of 13 shots, as the Highlanders (1-2) rolled over the Division II Sunbirds. Martin also had five assists and four steals for Riverside, which shot 54% from the field and held Fresno Pacific to 29%.

at UC Irvine 72, Pacific 65: Ioannis Dimakopoulos scored 19 points and the Anteaters (2-2) shot 51% and improved to 2-1 at home. Jack Williams had 17 points for the Tigers.

at Cal State Northridge 84, Northern Illinois 82: The Matadors (2-2) shot 52% and held on, as Aaron Parks had 22 points and eight rebounds.

at Cal State Bakersfield 77, UC Santa Barbara 70: Damiyne Durham made eight of 19 three-point attempts and scored 30 points for the Roadrunners. Jalen Canty had 11 points and 12 rebounds for the Gauchos (0-3), who led by two at the half.

at Nevada Las Vegas 75, Cal State Fullerton 68: Lionheart Leslie had 21 points and 10 rebounds for the Titans (2-1), but the Rebels had five players in double figures in the win.

Women

at Nevada Las Vegas 77, USC 66: Katie Powell scored 16 points off the bench and the Rebels won their third in row. Courtney Jaco had 16 points to lead the Trojans (2-1).
