Letters: They’re running out of patience with the Jeff Fisher and the Rams

I thought the Rams were supposed to be on TV Sunday. Imagine my surprise when I tuned in, only to find what appeared to be a replay of Thursday’s UCLA game.

I think Jeff Fisher is right. The Rams will not end up 7-9 again this year.

Isn’t it about time that Jeff Fisher takes a serious look in the mirror? His 42% winning percentage after five years with the Rams is unacceptable. Also keep in mind that he is only five loses away from breaking the current all-time NFL record (165) for coaching losses.

Fans have to be discouraged and frustrated when a professional football coach has more pairs of designer sunglasses then he does victories.

Case Keenum is not the problem. Todd Gurley is not the problem. Jeff Fisher is far and away the worst coach in the NFL. He and his inept offensive coordinator are responsible for undercutting the enthusiasm of an entire city.

Coaching-wise, the Rams need to take a lesson from the Lakers.

The Rams will never win with Jeff Fisher as head coach. Fisher still approaches football like he was still a defensive back for the 1985 Bears. He has no offensive imagination. He only knows how to coach tight defenses, run the clock down and keep the score low and close as possible.

Let me put this as succinctly as possible:

Chase Keenum. Fire Fisher. Go with Goff.

Here’s the deal. Either Jared Goff starts for the remainder of the season or Jeff Fisher is fired. End of the story.

The most significant proposition for Los Angeles in Tuesday’s election wasn’t even on the ballot here. It was the rejection by San Diegans of funding for a new stadium for the Chargers. This most likely will result in the team moving north, affording Los Angeles fans the opportunity to support a team that can actually score points. So light up those joints, folks, and get ready for some touchdowns.

You want to know why NFL TV ratings are down? It is because the game is no fun to watch anymore.

I have been watching pro football since 1946. Now nobody knows what a catch is, pass-interference calls are ridiculously called or not called, and the new Sunday night theme song is lousy.

Fighting on

So it seems “Bandwagon Bill” is at it again. Not only has Bill Plaschke rediscovered USC football, he is chastising readers (full disclosure: not me) who “blamed me for pushing for Helton’s hiring.” Really Bill, how can you lecture folks for questioning your judgment, which seems to have the stability of a feather in the wind? Also good to see you don’t want full credit unless the Trojans win out.

Moves are needed

Andy McCullough writes that because of their depth, the Dodgers can stand pat with their starters and their outfield. No, Andy, they can’t. While the Dodgers were trotting out, along with an overused Clayton Kershaw, an unprepared rookie and a journeyman castoff with a Fred Astaire leg kick, the Cubs gave their fans three Cy Young candidates and a former World Series hero.

Don’t construct the Dodgers in a vacuum. Study your competition and respond accordingly or second-best is all you’ll ever be able to hope for, if that. After 28 years, just contending is not enough. Ask the Cubs!

It was refreshing to watch a sport where the athletes don’t send damaging tweets, texts, or photos. And are not arrested for packing guns, domestic violence, drug use, or rape. They also don’t reside in million-dollar mansions and eat at five-star restaurants either. It’s the Sport of Kings. Last weekend’s Breeders’ Cup, the Super Bowl of horse racing, brought out more than 100,000 people at Santa Anita. It’s our love of these animals who give their all and provide us with thrilling exploits that compels us to cheer for them. So for at least for one weekend we didn’t read about a sport’s dark side and just enjoyed the purity and grace of it instead.

Lakers on rise

The Lakers are definitely an improved team. Kobe must have really imparted some wisdom right before he left.

Thank you, Kobe. Your selfishness, greed, and diminished abilities caused the Lakers to repeatedly finish near the bottom of the NBA. However, that enabled them to draft the players who are the nucleus of the current competitive and exciting team. It also gave Luke Walton time to develop his coaching skills.

Now if we could only do something about Jim Buss.

There’s a Dennis the Menace cartoon that shows Dennis sitting on Mrs. Wilson’s lap. It says sometimes a hug works better than a lecture.

But who will lead?

If there is a Pacquiao-Mayweather rematch, please save it for next season’s “Dancing with the Stars.”
