Charlie Weis is the highest paid member of the Notre Dame athletic department, even though he hasn’t worked for the university since 2009.

The former Fighting Irish football coach made his regular $2,054,744 salary in 2014, according to a recent Notre Dame tax return obtained by USA Today.

Weis has been paid that amount for the past four years, giving him a higher annual salary from the university than its highest paid current employee, football Coach Brian Kelly, who made $1.62 million in 2014.

In fact, Weis made more than all but two current Notre Dame employees -- vice president and chief investment officer Scott Malpass ($5.4 million) and managing director for private capital investments Michael Donovan ($2.3 million).

Weis received more than $6,638,403 in pay and severance in 2009, the year he was fired after going 35-27 in five years with the Fighting Irish. He was due one last payment from Notre Dame, which would bring the amount he’s earned from the university post-firing to $18,966,867.

While bringing in some of those paychecks, Weis also was making money as the offensive coordinator for the Kansas City Chiefs, offensive coordinator at Florida and head coach at Kansas, where he was fired in 2014 after posting just six wins in two-plus seasons.
