Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo is asking a South Florida court to show mercy on a college student who ran on the field at Sun Life Stadium last month to give him a long hug during a match with Chelsea.

Ronald Gjoka, a 20-year-old college student from Albania, faces charges that could lead to his deportation. So Ronaldo has written a letter to the Miami-Dade state attorney’s office asking that charges be dropped.

“I understand your position and the importance of enforcing rules and law,” Ronaldo wrote. “However, I respectfully request that you and your office reconsider this decision and dismiss the two criminal charges this young man faces.”

Gjoka attends Palm Beach State Community College, according to his attorney.

“I regret it,” Gjoka said, according to a Miami TV station. “Somebody could have gotten hurt, and I want the charges dropped so I can have a successful future.
