The Ducks set their regular-season roster at 23 players Tuesday by putting injured forwards Dany Heatley and Kyle Palmieri on injured reserve.

The moves allow rookie center William Karlsson to start with the Ducks on Thursday when they open the regular season at Pittsburgh.

Heatley, a two-time 50-goal scorer who scored twice in the preseason, was being pointed toward a spot on the first line with center Ryan Getzlaf and forward Corey Perry, who led the Ducks last season with 43 goals.

Heatley suffered a groin injury, however, and didn’t return to practice by Monday.

Palmieri, who scored 14 goals last season, hurt his ankle while practicing with friends around Labor Day and hasn’t practiced with the Ducks since.
