Dwight Howard made a brief stand on a very touchy subject over the weekend.

On Saturday afternoon, the former Laker and current Houston Rocket sent out this short tweet: “#FreePalestine.”

About 15 minutes later he deleted the message (although screenshots of it remain) and sent out a pair of new tweets in an attempt to backtrack. The first of those tweets said, “Previous tweet was a mistake. I have never commented on international politics and never will.”

His next tweet said, “I apologize if I offended anyone with my previous tweet, it was a mistake!”

Howard’s original tweet seems to have been inspired by a tweet he saw earlier in the day about the recent escalation of violence in the Middle East.

It’s unclear whether Howard, who has an Israeli teammate in Rockets forward Omri Casspi, commented too quickly on a situation he didn’t fully understand or was expressing his genuine feelings on the matter.

Either way, it doesn’t look like he’ll be clarifying the matter for us any time soon.
